Why Self-timers and Strangers?
Traveling solo doesn’t mean missing out on capturing memorable moments. I often rely on self-timers and the kindness of strangers to document my adventures—an experience that inspired the name 'Self-timers and Strangers'.

I’m Sarah Marie—a solo traveler, outdoor educator, and adventure photographer. More importantly, I believe adventure is for everyone. You don’t have to be outdoorsy or fearless to explore the world. Through my stories, photos, and travel guides, I want to make adventure feel approachable, helping you take that first step—whether it’s a solo road trip or just a walk in the woods.
How It All Began
I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Southwest Virginia, which laid a deep foundation for my love of nature and outdoor recreation. I spent my summers backpacking the Appalachian Trail, spelunking in Shenandoah, and rock climbing in North Carolina. These experiences taught me to appreciate nature at a young age and to tread lightly wherever I go. My travels are intentional, and I practice Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the beauty I’ve grown to love.
While I was raised in Virginia, I was born in Louisiana. Growing up in a "Louisiana Household" in the heart of Virginia gave me a deep appreciation for culture and the richness of traditions. This curiosity for people and places was sparked early on, thanks to the OG solo traveler in my life—my mom. She inspired me to embrace the world one journey at a time, often returning from her travels with gifts like dolls from around the globe. To this day, I have a shelf full of these treasures, each representing a corner of the world and a piece of her adventurous spirit.

What I do (and Why It Matters)
Teaching has always been close to my heart, but I discovered early on that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. My love for outdoor education blossomed after attending an adventure camp my mom signed me up for one summer. It was there I realized that education could be about exploring the world, breaking boundaries, and connecting with people in ways I never imagined.
Outdoor education gives me the unique opportunity to help people of all ages step outside their comfort zones and connect with nature. Whether it’s guiding a group through the Alaskan wilderness or helping someone tackle their first climb, I love watching people realize their own potential. Those breakthrough moments—when someone conquers a fear or discovers something new about themselves—are why I do what I do. Because when the world is your classroom, the sky’s the limit.

But my passion doesn’t stop there. I’ve also found magic in photography. Cameras are incredible tools, freezing moments in time and preserving memories forever. Through travel photography, I’ve been able to share my adventures with friends, family, and even strangers across the world. Photography has become my way of storytelling—capturing the beauty of a place and the emotions of a moment, all while inspiring others to dream bigger.
I often say that when I'm traveling, I’m on "scouting missions." I take pictures, create guides, and design interactive maps to help others see just how accessible adventure can be. As the youngest of five in a single-mother household, I’ve learned that no circumstance should stop you from exploring. My mom showed me that, and now I want to show everyone else.

My Travel Philosophy
Explore Intentionally
It is our job to protect each other and nature. We must travel intentionally and leave everywhere we visit better than we found it and always practice Leave No Trace.
Inclusive Adventures
I believe there should be no barriers to adventure. Exploring is for everyone regardless of their background or budget. We include, we don't exclude.

Everywhere is a Classroom
Everyone has something to teach and something to learn. With an Earth-sized classroom, we have much to learn from each other through our cultures, traditions, and stories.
Embrace the Discomfort
We are ever-evolving and growing. Push beyond your comfort zone, try new things, and be brave.
